A BRIEF HISTORY

This page is designed to inform the rowing public of the development of a new Rowing Boat Manufacturing venture in South Africa. The developer and boat builder in not new to the task. He started building boats in 1976 in Middleburg Transvaal and later East London. Tony developed the first Reinforced glass hulls to be made in South Africa in 1979 and the boat is still on the water.

CONSTRUCTION METHODS AND FITTINGS

TONY MELDAL- JOHNSEN, ( who has been rowing since 1962)is now  boat building in the Western Cape in the  country town of GREYTON under the name JOHNSEN ROWING AND SCULLING BOAT MANUFACTURERS (JRSBM) The boats are built using carbon /aramid ( trade Kevlar® construction with Industrial grade , over expanded NOMEX core supplied by the original developers of NOMEX® (phenolic resin impregnated hexagonal woven aramid, namely HEXCELL. The moulding process includes heat curing the vacuumed composite hull and deck parts at 45ºC as well as protection of the U V sensitive epoxy resin and aramid with three layers of polyurethane coating. The up to date construction methods include the use of Unidirectional Carbon tapes and enclosed decking, as well as the F.I.S.A regulation of closed decks with hatches. Fittings will be supplied from good quality spares from manufacturers such as Empacher, Neeves, Douglas, Montinoli .

JRSBM is in the process of developing his own unique hull designs, some of which he commenced but never completed in East London. The designs are unique and the boats are robust and quick, with two prototypes already on the water in 1976.With slight modification to the hull depth and the beam the new design looks extremely promising and will compete with any international boat now on the water. The basic rules of hull design have been applied to these rowing boats. Hull stiffness, minimum wave drag,  minimum friction with the water as well as stability are all factors taking into account with the new design. The boats are designed  to reduce wind resistance by adopting a low profile . The first boats were  launched in February 2006 and it is hoped a few will be shown and rowed at SA CHAMPS 2006 at ROODEPLAAT.

JRSBM will be catering for school rowing boats as well as for  seniors. Pictures of the boats will be published at the launch
