DAIRY FARMS
Dairy
farming is a stabilizing enterprises in Agriculture . The enterprise
ensures adequate cash flow for the farm on a monthly basis. The main
constraint is the long hours and commitment. Weekends
and holidays are never one's own because cows have to be attended to
at least twice a day. Marketing of fresh milk is competitive,
therefore, in recent times, farmers have expanded their operation to
add value to their dairy products. Small factories are being
established to produce butter, cheese, yoghurt , ice cream and other
value added dairy products.
Dairy is usually
included in a mixed farm, in combination with fruit farming, wine
farming, small grains and vegetable farming . Jersey, Friesland,
Guernsey are the main breeds used for milk production. Various types
of dairy systems are used ,namely extensive, in which the cows are
allowed to graze extensively on dry land pastures.
Extensive systems The extensive system is a low-cost input system with low
production and low risk. Extensive systems ,are usually done on
planted irrigated pasture, together with supplementary feeding in
the form of balanced rations. The latter appears to be the most
successful. It has low risk and relatively high returns.
Intensive system The intensive
system, where no pastures are included is losing favour, but
realizes high production, high value concentrates and high
gross returns at the expense of lower and riskier net returns. In
the latter system the cows tend to mature earlier and have to be
culled earlier. The average milking cow can give milk for
seven lactations and during that period can give on average of four
female calves, which will later be included in the herd or sold as
stud heifers to other dairy farmers. A very intensive system
shortens the lactation of cows to 3 or 4 years
