The Western Cape is
well know for fruit production.
-
Apricots, peaches,
plums and nectarines are the most popular stone fruits
produced are produced in the drier areas
-
Lemons, oranges,
Naartjies, grapefruit are the main Citrus produced in recent
times in warm valleys near mountains as well as the Breede
River Valley
-
Apples, pears are
produced in the cooler areas such as Grabouw/ Elgin area.
As a result many packaging and export companies have emerged
over the years to handle the sales of fruit on the local and
overseas markets which has resulted in local companies
competing for the same markets. In recent times however the
fruit industry growers and exporters decided in the interest
of the industry as a who're to reduce the sales companies to
only a few , thus resulting in better prices being obtained
on the overseas markets. Competion from produce from other
countries is ever present and the quality of South African
fruit is therefore of top quality to be able to compete with
the ever increasing volumes from countries like Chile and
China.
-
Therefore venture
into the current fruit industry with extreme caution
